The field of genetics focuses on chromosomes, genes, the inheritance of genetic traits, and the genetic diversity of living organisms. It emphasizes research at both the chromosomal and DNA levels across various life forms, including humans, plants, animals, and microorganisms. The Department of Botany at Chulalongkorn University places a strong emphasis on research in the following areas
Human Genetics Research: This foundational medical knowledge focuses on diseases in the elderly caused by various gene abnormalities, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Research also includes pharmacogenetics, which aims to match medications to the genetics of patients undergoing kidney transplants for optimal treatment outcomes. Additionally, studies investigate the mechanisms of cancer development and methods for cancer diagnosis through DNA and RNA testing to aid in future prevention and treatment strategies.
Cytogenetic Studies: This area focuses on research involving both plants and animals. Students can use microscopy to study the chromosomes of different species and arrange them according to international standards, which is beneficial for classifying plants and animals based on the number and structure of their chromosomes.
Plant Breeding Genetics: This research emphasizes the genetics of genes that control important agricultural traits, such as disease and pest resistance, tolerance to unfavorable environmental conditions, and quality characteristics of produce. Research is focused on economically significant crops, such as soybeans and rice.
Microbial Genetics Studies: This research aims to identify and improve microorganisms for industrial applications, such as isolating microbes with suitable properties for biofuel production.
